1st Place Winner: Ena Brdjanowic, Brownsburg HS
To the Indiana Association of Students of German: The three weeks I spent in Germany were truly an amazing experience. Nothing you see or hear in German class can compare to actually experiencing the country for yourself. I can't thank the Indiana Association of Students of German enough for the scholarship that helped fund my exchange. In June of 2006, I participated in the German American Partnership Program through Brownsburg High School. A group of seventeen students and two teachers made the trip to Kassel, Germany. The majority of my time was spent in Kassel, Hessen with my host family, who by the end of the trip were like a second set of parents and siblings to me. My host family introduced to me German culture and traditions. Going to a German movie theater, German restaurants, grocery stores, a German soccer game, attending German school, and going to the "diskos" gave me the greatest insight into typical German life. I had heard a lot about German culture, but to see it for myself was an experience in and of itself. Everything from the German school system (they only go to school until one o'clock!) to public transportation was a brand new experience for me. Our group's time in Kassel was offset with trips to Berlin, Munich, and Salzburg, Austria. The architecture and the grandness of all three cities was mesmerizing. Writing my name on the infamous Berlin Wall, shopping at the KaDeWe in Berlin, eating lunch at Munich's original Hofbrauhaus (beer garden), visiting Mozart's place of birth in Salzburg, and looking out my youth hostel window to see the Alps were unbelievable experiences. Sightseeing in Germany took on a completely new meaning. My three weeks in Germany gave me an insight into an incredible culture and country. Sincerely, Ena Brdjanovic 2nd Place Winner: Kevin Martz, Brownsburg HS 3rd Place Winner: Billy Myers, Lawrence Central HS Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, Ich wollte der IASG danken, weil Sie mir geholfen haben, diesen Sommer mit dem Sommerprogramm des Indiana Universitäts nach Krefeld, Deutschland zu fahren. Es war vielleicht das beste Erlebniss meines Lebens, und ich werde diesen Sommer sicher nie vergessen! Ohne Ihre Hilfe wäre das nicht möglich gewesen! Ich bin vom 7. Juni bis zum 22. Juli in Krefeld mit der Familie Läckes gewesen. Krefeld war echt schön, und meine Familie war ganz lieb. Während des Sommers habe ich sehr viel gelernt, in der Schule und auch jeden Tag mit meiner Familie. Ich habe mehr Fortschritte gemacht, als ich mir vorher hätte vorstellen können. Obwohl es schwierig war, habe ich kein Wort English gesprochen, wie ich versprochen habe, und deswegen war der Sommer besonders wertvoll. Ich habe die Gelegenheiten gehabt, mit meiner Famile nach Wien zu fahren, und mit der Gruppe nach Berlin, Aachen, und ein paar anderen Städten zu fahren. Wien war bestimmt am schönsten, besonders die Schlösser und die alten Gebäude. Sowas haben wir nirgendwo in Amerika. Es war auch schön, alles mit 18 fremden Schülern zu erfahren und die als Freunde kennenzulernen. Und bestimmt am besten war die Weltmeisterschaft! Leider hat Deutschland nicht gewonnen, aber es hat unglaublich viel Spaß gemacht, mit den Deutschen zu feiern und die Kultur zu erleben. Jetzt bin ich im 5. Jahrgang Deutsch als Senior. Weil mein Deutsch während des Sommers so viel verbessert wurde, kann ich jetzt den anderen Schülern in meiner Klasse helfen. Ich habe eine große Interesse für Deutsch entwickelt, und ich hoffe, in der Zukunft mehr mit Deutsch zu tun und vielleicht eines Tages in Deutschland zu leben. Vielen herzlichen Dank!
